We all seem to go from wearing diapers to paying attention to what the older folks like our parents are listening to on the radio
every kid ends up in the back seat of the car while your parents run errands and most always the radio is playing some kind of noise
From our diapers to understanding television and the radio and for most of us as children its the cartoons until we reach the early teen years
I was eleven years old when i wanted one of those hand held radios with the speaker built in so i could take it to the bus stop and wven to bed at nights
It was 1971 when i started changing the channels on that little radio and during the day time hours i would listen to music and at night on the AM band i could fall asleep listening to baseball games
Some if you know i lost my mother when i was eight years old and the live in baby sitter was abusive to all of kids so i ran away from home when i turned 14 and needless to say me and that hand held radio became real buddies while i slept here their and every where
The two songs in my teen years i remember best was tom jones "shes a lady" and elton john "crocodile rock" but it didnt take long to understand their was country music and rock music on various radio stations
i did not know it then that as i the years went by i would be deep into music and instantly had the natural ability to listen to so many different types of sound
I would look through magazines just to see columbia house music advertisements and then gaze through the many albums that were no bigger than a thumbnail
The 60s was over by the time i reached my teen years so all that music and history would come for me at some point down the road because the 70s had my attention
once you learn how to operate a radio new songs popped up just about every week and that was where you were with music
What i did learn later on was many artist from the 60s had deceased and some bands like creedance clearwater revival had gone their seperate ways
Speaking of seperate ways the early 70s group "boston" had two songs that played over and over on the rock radio channels and that would be it for that sound
Artist like jimmy hendrix janis joplin jim morrison were gone wiyj only their music as a reminder by the time i reached the teen years of life
Back in the 70s local radio staions didnt play much black sabbath steppenwolf led zepplin so these were bands your friends would turn you on to in the partying days
The 70s was my generation along with the 80s and thanks to k-tel records you discovered many hits right on your turn table
Our generation believed in music and it was happening on television with the midnight special soul train solid gold sonny and cher hour
The 70s had many artist hosting their own shows on television like sonny and cher tom jnnes glen campbell engelbert humperdink and others
Lets not forget hee haw in the 70s because their was plenty of music and every week a special guest appearance
The rd sullivan show was just before my time but later i would understand just how important it was to the sound of music
If you were an artist or a band television was important to your career and through out the 70s and 80s many were noticed
Tom jones first appearence on the ed sullivan show let folks know he was not a black singer which is what many tought before then
The solo careers of george harrison john lennon ringo star and paul mccarthy were a part of 70s music and each one tasting similar success
Luckily some artist found success on their own like diana ross michael jackson eric clapton peter frampton and so many others because these artist provided great musical memories
Right dab smack in all the music going on in the 70s and 80s was elton john whom not only had songs all over the radio stations back then but how about record albums turning gold
The 70s had so many different styles of music going and then along came the disco sound which taught people to do a lttle dance
The disco era which lasted several years before dying out was the most criticized form of music this world has ever known
Without disco the bee gees wouldnt have had a second chance and their would not have been the careers of donna summers kc and the sunshine band and others
What hurt disco music reputation was far to many were joining in on the act without really trying to leave behind good musical memories
Half of the disco music was pretty good stuff and the other half sounded like their was something serious missing
Of all the solo artist from the 60s continuing their careers into the 70s and 80s noone scored any higher right bedore his death than marvin gaye with "sexual healing"
As time moved past marvin gaye last hit sexual healing i would give the vote to another guy from the 60s whom would die later on after scoring a big hit and thats james brown "i feel good">br> Whom is the best singer ever? no its not tom jones! Dont laugh about this but i find it hard going to my grave and not rewarding stevie wonder with that acclaim
Stevie wonder could change his vocals at any given moment and because he never kept the same sound while recording in the studio made him very unique
Best bocal in a band ? As tough as this choice should be i dont hesitate when saying lou gramm of foreigner fame youre the man
Best female voice? Geeze it use to be diana ross and then it was donna summers and how can i rest in peace without declaring madonna possibly the best ever
A musical surprise how many knew billy joel in the 80s out sold everyone including bands with his continous concert sales
Back to the 70s generation no performer was larger than elvis presley who had fan support world wide and selling records was never an issue in his career
Tom jones and elvis presley kept the female crowd screaming right into the 70s annd will go down in history for their sex appeal
In the 70s music lovers had no compact disc or internet as a source of listening pleasure! What we had was turn table reel to reel cassettes and 45s
What we did have that todays generation doesnt have is constant HBO concert specials VHI and MTV videos when they really played such and all those other shows like the midnight special solid gold soul train hee haw and on goes this list
The baby boomers of today missed out on the music we grew up listening to and i guess you really tell your age when you talk about these great memories
Todays generation may listen to led zepplin pink floyd queen alice cooper ozzy osbourne foreigner journey madonna mariah carey michael jackson janet jackson and others but not in the moment ehen it was just happening
I have over looked and caught up with a lot of music in my many years but not always in the moment so i know what it feels like to be late
The 70s had many one hit wonders that have not been forgotten like chevy van under cover angel allright now seasons in the sun and if i cant have you and many more which still are heard on the radio at random
Who would have thought alice cooper would have two of my all time favorite tunes from the 70s with ill never cry and you and me
Sadly i did miss the break through of the 60s music which included CCR the guess who the doors the beatles led zepplin the stones steppenwolf the rascals the buckinghams and this list just cries for help
I did not miss the early years of ACDC fleetwood mac foreigner dokken ratt journey slaughter poison slayer slaughter and others
In your party days you discover music others listen to and was you one of those that needed to hear tracks on albums that recieved no air play
The song of the 70s decade for me was a one hit wonder and sounded good every time "alright now" by the free band and freams by fleetwood mac had to be second
The song of the 80s decade for me belong to a band that only had one good album aldo nova "fantasy" although benny mardonas "into the night" was a very close second
Thank goodness for music because its like a time line in your life and so many memories to enjoy
As i have gotten older i have gotten into the careers of gordon lightfoot brenda lee and the 60s sound
It is impossible to hear everything that is considered music through the many years but i made sure i didnt miss no more than i had too
Its important to sometimes settle in with music you enjoy most regardless of others taste after all its your ears that are listening
See the you tube play list i have put togeather to get an ideal of where i am with my knowledge in music
Long cool lady in a black dress could easily be the one song i never ever lost touch with through the years
Oh by the way in the 70s what sound did not exist? if you answered rap music then you were correct however their were story tellers that helped inspire the thought
The doobie brothers cleaned up in the 70s with a different approach to music which hinged right on the border line of rock and easy listening
The eagles perhaps music most talented band ever scored many times over in the 70s and 80s with tunes you found yourself singing
The road to music goes in so many directions and yet i am shocked by those whom only listen to the radio where ever they go
Their are die hard music lovers in this world and consider me when you hand out the award of honor because i have not yet touched on the country music i remember starting with the golden years of the 70s
